What IS "vintage" and, equally, what does "vintage" connote?

If you search dictionary.com you have to read all the way to the 6th definition, after all the wine-related definitions, before you get to:
"the class of a dated object with reference to era of production or use" . Say what? Being of a specific time period - like a 50's poodle skirt, a 60's mini-skirt, a 70's maxi-skirt.
To most of us vintage begins at the time immediately past our earliest memory.
- If you were born in the 40s you likely remember vintage formica and chrome kitchen sets.
- If you're a love child from the 60's maybe you have a special place in your heart for vintage platform shoes and over-sized sunglasses.
- If you were born in the 80s your idea of a classic vintage car is a 1969 Mustang.
For many of us vintage conjures good feelings of a past time - like vintage cars; vintage movies, vintage jokes - and how about vintage furniture?
What makes furniture vintage and not just used? To the Calderwoods, it is high quality furniture that was modern* in its moment - specifically the 60's, 70's, and 80's - that actually qualifies it as vintage. This is furniture that epitomized the design and technological breakthroughs of its era. Like the use of molded bent Lucite combined with patinated metals; cork used like veneer; and acid-etched abstract cityscapes on brass panels.
*And then, there's "modern"
To find the meaning of "modern" you need only go to the first definition to find
"of or pertaining to present and recent time; not ancient or remote" .
Vintage Modern - there's a seemingly incongruous term. Not at Calderwood 2. Vintage Modern = Vintage now, Modern in its moment.
